ICT in science

ICT in science means that we used the application of technology in order to make the education system which are complex in learning to be more easier for us to understand the topic. For this application it can be used in all subjects but we are focussed more in science learning. The application system that can be applied are data logging, simulation,modelling and also IWB (interactive white board). In the class of ICT, we are trained to use this kind of applications in all our presentations. With the help of our demostrater and also our lecturer, we are able to use all these applications although at first we are not familiar with that them. ICT plays an important role in teaching science since it can give many benefits to teacher to help them delivering the knowledge to their students. The list below shows some of benefits of ICT in teaching science:

1. ICT can provide access to a huge range of resources that are of high quality and relevant to scientific learning. In some cases the resources fill gaps where there are no good conventional alternatives; in other cases they complement existing resources. In some cases ICT resources are less good than conventional alternatives and do not add to learning.

2. The multi-media resources available enable visualisation and manipulation of complex models,three dimensional images and movement to enhance understanding of scientific ideas

3. ICT widens the range of material that can be used in teaching and learning to include text, still and moving images and sound, and increases the variety of ways that the material can be used for whole class and individual learning. This means that a teacher can go some way to meeting the needs of students with different learning styles. ICT also allows teachers with different teaching styles to modify materials and the way they are used in different and effective ways.

4. ICT can improve the quality of data available to students. Information gleaned from the internet can be more up to date, and data obtained from loggers can include more frequent and more accurate experimental readings.

5Computers also allow repetitive tasks to be carried out quickly and accurately so that more student time can be spent on thinking about the scientific data that has been generated..

Simulation

what is simulation?
We will get to learn about the simulation through the uses of simulation software. This software is created to make accurate models to represent the behaviour of real situation. By changing the variables on simulation software, we can make the predictions on the behaviour of the system. This simulation software has provided the science students with theoretical or simplified models of real-word phenomena.

benefits over real life experimentation?
-it provides significant advantages in terms of cost, time and repeatability when variability, disruption and complexity exist

-Bork (1981) remarks: 'Simulations provide students with experience that may be difficult or impossible to obtain in every day life'

-Foster (1984) says about this: 'Simulations can be entertaining because of dramatic and game-like components'

disadvantages of simulation?

-Expensive to build a simulation model.

-Expensive to conduct simulation.

-Sometimes it is difficult to interpret the simulation results.

Data Logging

For this week, my class is continued as usual. We learnt about data logger. The data logger is an electronic instrument that records measurements over time. For the science teacher this will give many benefits to them such as help their students to have better understanding of science concepts. The benefit of using this data logger is more obvious if we are carried out the scientific experimenttation. Through this lessons, i was introduced to many sensors such as temperature sensor,humidity sensors,pH sensors and others.

Adsanvatages of Data Logger?

-new innovative experiments possible

-more collegial collaboration opportunities

-better understanding of scientific experimentation

-greater interest in practical work

Disadvantages of Data Logger?

-some people may not like working on computer system

-loss of conventional methods of data colection

-reduced practice of graphing skills

How can be applied?

By doing experiment on:

-transpiration

-food energy

-velocity & acceleration

-fermentation

IWB

Hello friends!! Haaa..have you ever heard about IWB which is Interactive White Board??Omm.let me introduce you with another words-SMART Board.Still not get it?

Okeii friends.give me a chance to share what i’ve got. IWB is actually the newly techo tools that will be used in learning.This IWB can help the teachers to make the transformations in their teaching and learning process. The transformations is about to replace the traditional method using blackboard or whiteboard into the IWB. This IWB is so friendly as it will allow us to just use our fingers to write anything on it. Besides using the fingers,you can also used the markers that is already prepared. IWB is really effective to be used because it helps the teachers to record their instructions and post materials for students to review on the later on. The time of learning can be used wisely while using the IWB. It allows the teachers to do many activities which will involve the student’s participate during teaching & learning process. The uses of IWB in teaching & learning will promotes more interaction between students and teachers where they can drag the pictures,shape,text and others in order for them to point out the solutions. After i’ve learnt about IWB, all my presentation will not longer be done with powerpoints. We are compulsory to used this as one of interactive method for teaching & learning.
Interaction of students & teachers can be promoted.


PBL

Problem Based Learning or in short form it is known as PBL. Through this learning, it will introduced to us students-centered pedagogy in which student learn the subject in the context of complex. What i like the most about the PBL is it opens up the space for students to point out their ideas that they get from their prior knowledge. So, i can share my knowledges together with my friends. This PBL learning also has boosted my motivation’s level. It occurs when everyone in the group are being responsible to find out the answer and represented it to the friends. Moreover, by doing this PBL, it can help me to increased my socialized and communicated skills whether among the students or with the instructors. The development of life-long learning process can also be one of it’s advantages of PBL.

Based on this development, students can have the skills on how to do research, handle with the problems and how to communicate in groups properly. Besides that, the PBL learning also make me feel more enjoyable to discover the problems because it promotes the curiosity in myself. In other words, i can say that the PBL learning gives us the oppotunities to have independent learning. Being a proactive thinkers also has been focussed in this learning.The value such as teamwork can also be applied during learning from the PBL. This teamwork will help us to discover our potential towards the leadership skills. The disadvantages of PBL is it requires lots of time to settle out a certain topics. This PBL also introducing higher cost as it needs technological instruments such as laptop and internet access in order for them to solve their problems as an alternative methods besides used the books. This PBL learning will give lots of problem for those passive students and lower-thinking students. In PBL, it is more on students participants to be active and they also need to change their study’s habit from memorizations of facts to be more active learners in searching the information required.

The other weakness of PBL is when there is sleeping partner in a group. This situation will affect for the whole process of group’s studying. Futhermore, is about the comitments. Students with low comitments will not go deep into the sources to get the clear informations. Therefore, all the member’s group will not get the answers that they are really wants. For the facilitator, they needs to encourage students to be active and brave enough to represent what they have search for. Facilitators also have to make sure that the students are on the track for their discussion.

my teaching philosophy



Education is a process involves educating and teaching. The term educate means to develop the knowledge, skills or characters. Generally, from the aspects of education it can be divided into two scopes which are “educare” (latih) and “educere”(didik). These two terms carry different meaning on itself. Educare is a process that are related to the skills of human and are limited. While for the educere, it’s more on the knowledge and are continous along the life. Therefore, learning is always be refer as a long life journey. Some of us has taught that teaching is just such an easier work to be done. But, how many people realized that teaching is not just deliver the knowledge to the students, but it’s more on how the teachers need to do in order to produce a product of human with good quality. For my opinion, i think that a successful teacher is not only going to the class and will stop teaching once its time comes to stop. Planning the lesson is the first things that teacher should do. During planning the lessons, the teachers need to consider their students ability. As for me, im sure that all of my students are unique, since they are born with the different abilities. So, as their teachers, i should used different methods of teaching and learning process. By this way, i will make sure that all of my students can get what i taught to them. Besides that, i also need to be mentally prepared when it comes to have a problematic students. Having problematic students is a challenge to the teacher’s career. This challenges can be settle out as the teachers being professional to handle with it. For those students, what the teachers should do is to give a help and try to motivate them up and not to make they feel down. The true meaning succeess in teacher’s profession is when the teachers can manipulate the student’s behaviour from worst to better human in life.
